incarcerate, v. [in-kahr-suh-reyt, ĭn-kär-sə-rāt]
-Meaning 'to put [something] in prison,' incarcerate was brought into English around 1550 CE as a learned word from Medieval Latin incarcerare, of the same meaning. This Medieval Latin term is a compound verb formed from the Latin prefix in- 'in, within' and root carcer 'a prison, an enclosed space.' Scholars are not sure exactly where carcer comes from, as few related words have yet to be found in other languages.

"one of our favorite wall clocks, the catena wall clock harkens back to traditional mechanical clocks. copper digits mounted onto a bicycle chain place emphasis on the cyclical nature of time. this clock is a striking clock, literally and figuratively."

I got a comment about my last comic saying that it condoned smoking, but I don't, that is nonsense! You should also not lasso cats out of trees, if that doesn't go without saying. Historical smoking is another matter, go ahead and have a smoke in the trench, but I advise against lighting three cigarettes at night.
Remembrance Day always makes me ruminative about the place of history in our current consciences, because it is one of the few holidays where we are explicitly told listen you have to remember this thing that happened ok and, one, people pay attention, two, there is nothing jamming the line like bbq's or parties or football games or chocolate eggs or presents. History: You should give a shit, who knew.
Just so we are clear though, I don't really care about Queen Victoria's birthday either so go ahead and slam it back on May 24 weekend, fireworks and the whole bit. Honestly we should all get free corgis on Victoria Day.
Had a really, really fun photoshoot with Visioluxus / Elisa Lazo de Valdez!

Does anyone have any suggestions for books/websites on base training? In a couple weeks I want to start some sort of a training plan for myself in preparation for the 2010 Collegiate road season and I'd like to get more specific advice other than to ride my bike a lot. Thanks :)
This post reminded me that I've been meaning to ask a question or 2.
I'm an omni parent of a veg*n kid, and she asked me, and I haven't found an answer elsewhere, some pretty good questions about gardening.
I've seen here and on other vegan groups people talk about organic vegetables and how wonderful they are (and, let's be honest, they are), but a lot of what organic growers use, in place of chemicals, are animal products. Bone meal, blood meal, fish emulsion, manure.
So, veganpeople who garden, what is your opinion on using manure in your garden?
What about vermicompost? Would that be an animal product?
I'm not looking to get flamed, I just want a little enlightenment. Many thanks for your opinions.

November 12 - Stock Free Organic Farming - 8:30 pm (PST)
By using crop rotations, fertility building green manures and sustainable agricultural practices, Iain Tolhurst of Tolhurst Organic Produce, Oxfordshire, UK, farms without any animal inputs, such as manures or animal byproducts. This successful vegetable box scheme producer (the UK equivalent of our CSA) provides more than 400 boxes/week of produce using 90% of his own produce and does so with a very low carbon footprint. Iain's webinar will discuss his stockfree farm, the rotations they use, how biodiversity is managed for pest and disease control, and their marketing structure. He will also show how they have developed a low carbon footprint and the development of carbon sequestration within a farm cropping system.
The deadline for registration is midnight, of the Wednesday before each seminar.

Did anyone catch this on The View this morning? I'm supposed to be working on my master's thesis but sometimes I can't resist daytime tv...
One of the co-hosts Sherri Shepherd came out strutting in a mink coat and from what I gathered (it is damn near impossible to understand what these women are yammering on about because they appear to constantly speak over one another), she and Whoopi Goldberg were speaking in favour of fur coats. Whoopi went so far as to claim owning a fur coat is what "every little black girl dreams of..they don't dream of being ballerinas they dream of owning fur coats" (that is paraphrased - I cannot find a clip on youtube yet but that is the basic message). I myself am not a black woman but I am aware of the great many black men and women who support and participate in our vegan cause and so I find this kind of generalized remark horribly offensive.
Interestingly, Woody Harrelson was the guest later on in the show and since he is a widely publicized veg*n/animal rights advocate/environmentalist they asked him what he thought about it and he seemed visibly uncomfortable. He made some awkward remarks and then said something along the lines of "can we move on". I would have loved to see him let her have it and was quite disappointed when he didn't, but I understand that he was there to promote a movie and not engage in a debate. Sometimes, we all get burnt out. Quite frankly, I find it quite rude that they put him on the spot like that, and consider it disrespectful that Sherri would use today to focus on her cruelty-based ignorance.
The most ridiculous part of the whole thing is that Sherri began defending herself by saying that the money she paid for the coat goes to battered women's shelters so it's "okay". Um, how about just donating money to a cause you believe in, you have to GET something for it and not only that but TAKE something (i.e. LIVES) that don't belong to you in order to help battered women? We (as vegans) can't possibly be the only people who find this to be flawed logic? Inflicting suffering to mediate suffering...is she serious?
Yesterday on the show, apparently Barbara Walters was saying she was going to stop eating pork because she learned of how intelligent pigs are and of course the entire time Sherri Shepherd was speaking over her naming off foods that "pigs are good for" while Barbara was trying to speak..and they had someone on who was showing healthy alternative meal ideas and one of them involved soy jerky to which Whoopi and Sherri both reacted with "THAT'S NOT JERKY!!! JERKY IS MEAT!!" over and over in several different ways.
This is all irrelevant because Sherri Shepherd is also the same person who claimed that the world could be flat, so I would like to think that no one out there takes these women's words as gospel and quite frankly I can't believe I sat through not one but two episodes this past week (I guess it's like a train wreck you can't look away). I was just curious as to what other viewers' reactions may have been. And I guess I also wanted to vent a little bit.
If anyone has a clip, feel free to link it in here, if anyone is interested in seeing ignorance at its finest (although even seeing the fur coat on tv made me nauseated so please be forewarned before watching if you are highly sensitive to these kinds of images).
Finally, a day off from oatmeal.
